Iris is Doing Great; I’m Still Lookin’

Iris is going on 4 weeks on the job.

She’s learning more and more each day, and becoming a greater part of the team that helps the Durant City Manager’s Office run smoothly.

As for me, I’m crankin’ out resumes like there’s no tomorrow. Along with sending out resumes, I’m taking an online course, the Essentials of HR, created by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM,) a professional organization I joined a month ago. HR is my new career path, if I can just break in.

That’s it for now.

Edward's Turtle Pie

Edward's Turtle Pie

Celebration time. Iris is now the Receptionist for our City Manager’s Office.
She’s worked over a decade in a face paced medical & education administration field, so this feels right at home. Her co-workers like her, she likes them, the office is a professional setting, so she feels right at home — jobwise.

The timing was perfect. She turned in her resignation from her Verison DSL Technical Support job, and in less than 10 days she had a resume submitted to the City of Durant, and was called in almost immediately for an interview. A second interview a couple of days later, and after meeting with the City Manager, she was hired. She’ll be a good fit there.

Now, if only yours truly can find a job. I’m lookin’, I’m lookin’.

Now here’s an unemployment story

Yeah, yeah, I’m still alive and writing. I finally heard the “unemployed with bills to pay” story to top them all. I was at the dentist the other day (still covered by my insurance with the Stimulus Package is covering SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT of COBRA,) and the woman who collects the payments told me about her daughter. Her daughter works in some facet of the fashion industry in New York. She’s young, educated and enjoys her field.

Unfortunately for her, she has been laid off from her job. Unfortunate because she recently signed a new rental lease.  I don’t know about you, but if I was freshly unemployed, (wait a minute, I AM freshly unemployed,) and had just recently signed an 18 month contract for a $2,700 small apartment, I don’t know what I’d do. Her mom suggested just getting the heck out of Dodge, and hope they don’t follow you for the apartment lease.

Can you believe it? An apartment lease for $2,700 a month?!  Gak!

Okay, here’s a NYT link on being unemployed in NYC. If you’re in my shoes, (unemployed, but in a s-l-i-g-h-t-l-y less expensive part of the country) perhaps this will make you feel not quite as bad in your situation.

A one bedroom apartment in the apartment complex that I grew up in, (Stuyvesant Town, below) now goes for $3,575. When I was growing up, my dad was paying $600 for our t-h-r-e-e bedroom apartment on the top floor, which over looked the oval. Today you couldn’t get the bathroo for $600. Let’s hear your story. ~ Les

Police Dispatcher

This was an interesting one I applied for today. It was listed on Oklahoma jobs, or whatever our local site is called. Anyway… I went down to our job place and updated my resume. After that I took an assessment test. After that, another test, basic math and reading. Last but not least, I printed out copies of stuff for them to send to the police department. Bottom line, (I found out at the end) $10.38 per hour. Worst of all, I was told that this was one of the BEST paying jobs in their system. That didn’t exactly pump me up.

Still Alive, Still Looking

Well, this afternoon I finished 3 more cover letters to accompany 3 more sets of resumes & letters of reference. Other than that, life goes on as always.

Tomorrow it’s off to the doc with my wife for her 5-week checkup following her vertical laparotomy and cyst/fallopian tube removal. After that it’s off to her chiropractor for a bit of electrode treatment, and then we’re going to drop down to IKEA at the Frisco Mall to see if we can find a cherry blossom on rice paper print.

Signing out… ~ Les
