Laid Off, Now What?

February 25, 2010

A few interviews later, still hunting.

It’s just a matter of time.

It’s been a while since I posted. Over the last month I have been on several interviews, but nothing has panned out. I had two interviews with the Oklahoma Small Business Development Center (OSBDC) but the position I was seeking was finally offered to someone else. I also had an interview for a Research Analyst position with the Choctaw Nation, but that was eventually offered to someone else as well. I was originally told that there had been numerous applicants for that position, from all over the country. The CN required a submission of a research paper to simply qualify for a chance to interview. I passed that landmark and did have a personal interview, but as I said, the position was offered to and accepted by another candidate.

I am happy to have had the opportunity to apply for these positions, and to have been considered as a viable candidate. I will continue to apply for any positions for which I am qualified for, for both Southeastern Oklahoma State University or the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Back to the hunt. To be continued.

2010 is Going to Be My Year

Either that, or I’m going to go crazy!

Seriously though, I’m still committed to finding that perfect job that’s out there waiting for me, so stay tuned. I’m not going to quit looking until I die, and thankfully that hasn’t happened yet.

I thought I had it. I went on an interview and then a followup interview with the Oklahoma Small Business Development Center (OSBDC) for a position as a Business Analyst. Both interviews went well. After the second interview I created a spreadsheet for them with the information they provided, took a grammar test and did a few hypothetical case scenario assessments. However, on Saturday I received a rejection letter, 2 – 3 weeks after the final interview.

Oh well, I’m not giving up. I have also applied for a position with Southeastern Oklahoma State University as an Academic Advisor. We’ll see where that goes.

More to come, hopefully good news.

I had an interview with the local college, but found out 2 weeks later that they had hired someone else. However, I applied for an even better position with the college this week. We’ll see how this turns out. I’m still upbeat. (Not beat up.)

Could it be? Yes. I finally got an interview!

Eurika! an interview with my alma mater.

I know, this blog has enough cobwebs on it to trip a rhinoceros. So what are ya gonna do, fire me? I have been putting out resumes to the *few* decent positions I see around, or find online, but believe me, they’re not pouring down the streets of Durant.

I won’t go into details as to what the position is, but I must say, it would be an honor to be able to return to Southeastern Oklahoma State University as part of the team out there to help others learn. If I am fortunate enough to be selected for the position, I will post full details.

That’s all for now. Hopefully I will hear from them before the end of September.

I’m Still At It, and Iris is Job Hunting Once Again

We’re both job hunting, again.

Things just didn’t work out for Iris with Verison DSL Small Business Technical Support. She is fantastic with people and customer service, but just isn’t a walking/talking techie. It was very stressful, and together we decided that this position was not worth the amount of stress that it put on her. But she tried, and is welcome to return or even work part time, but it’s not a good fit. Iris is once again searching, searching, searching. Go get ’em, Iris.

Raytheon (once again) sent me a notification that I meet the criteria that they set forth for a certain position. In this case, I match on all ten points for what they are seeking for a Supply Specialist II. What they’re communicating is, “if you’re interested in this position, you’d better get your resume submitted for this one.” Raytheon is very well set up to allow you to access your documents that you have previously uploaded in order to submit them again for another opening. If only more companies were this organized! We’ll see if I can get called in for an interview on this one. The opening is for their McKinney, Texas plant, but that’s still within driving range. We’ll see how this one plays out.

Week 2, unemployed but moving forward. I’ll be hunting new opportunities and sending our resumes. Perhaps I’ll even get my first unemployment check in. Wouldn’t that be nice?

For any others that are out there looking for a job, best of success to you! Let me know how it goes for you, what works and what doesn’t. We’re going to find something good out there. ~ Les

What to do, what to do…

Iris got a job today and starts training in April. I don’t know what I want to do. I have a job offer from the same place, and could work on the same schedule as Iris, just not as her supervisor. Anyway, I think I can find a way better paying job, so that’s my dilemma. I’m not thinking about it any more tonight.

I think I’ll sleep on this one.

Tomorrow’s Friday. That’s even nice when you’re unemployed.

Good nite. ~ Les

Tomorrow: Same place, 2nd interview

Interview # 2, for a position that pays less than my unemployment. So, I guess tomorrow will be chalked up as “interview practice.” I’d like to go to work for this company, but I can’t afford to, literally.  It is for SO much less than what I was making, even if they offered me a supervisory position right from the start, which is not their common policy. Iris on the other hand might take a job there, because it will be a nice supplement to my better paying job, “if & when” I get one.

Tomorrow ends that phase of job hunting. Iris will probably accept if offered, I’ll be turning it down. After we get tomorrow over with, I’ll be looking into a job as an Assistant Manager that pays pretty well. Still not as well as my previous job, but if Iris gets the job tomorrow, and I get the Assistant Manager job, it will be a net gain.

I still hope to return to my previous job, but that opportunity may not arise for years to come. I hope that’s not the case. So where will I be applying for an Assistant Manager’s job?

Well, we all know them.

I’m off to dream of double-dip cones from this company. Stay tuned. ~ Les
